Clip art, as its name suggests, is a form of graphic art that makes use of pre-existing images. These drawings / images are either copied or physically cut from existing works in the printed format on a particular topic. The sources of these pictures are either books that have entered the public domain or books specifically published for such use. Logos, mascots, identity and business cards, invitations, letterheads, etc., can be made by cutting or copying the images. Clip art facilitates the availability of a pool of generic art that can be used and reused by non-artists. Using your old Christmas cards or some of your Royalty free Christmas clipart graphic images, select the pictures you want to use. Just print out and cut your selected Christmas graphic images. You will need three Christmas card regular sized images to make the Christmas placemat. Once you've found a usable image, print yourself a copy of any images with labeled parts. Then use a paint program to white out the labels and print that copy for your child. Your child can label or color the image and have both art and science lesson at the same time.
I take the clipart and then print it out in various sizes for how I want to use it. I can drop it off at the cake decorator's so that she can make me a cake with that pattern. Then, I email a copy to my husband's work so that he can print out a few copies in a larger format. These become cut outs that I place on the walls... almost like a logo. The type of clipart that I use is important for all of the different effects that I'm creating. It needs to be a vector drawing for sure, as non-vector drawings are bitmaps that don't resize nicely... they'll just get all bumpy and not look good. Also, I'm drawn to simply line art because if it's too complex sometimes it doesn't look as good in the different sizes. It's also good if it's a single color, usually black, because then I can change it to whatever I want quite easily just using simple graphics software. Just remember, simple is better, is cleaner, and usually creates a more sophisicated look. Teddy bear clipart is very much in demand today, and not that hard to come by. And if you want it for free, then there are a lot to choose from, but you can't use it for commercial reasons. Many of the sites will allow you to put the images on your own personal website but don't want you charging people to put it on their sites, but don't charge people to use or download it. You won't be breaking any copyright infringement laws as long as you follow the site's rules. You might want to consider buying clipart as well, but free is more fun if you can find what you need. There will be clipart from Spiderman, the newspaper boy, Angels, and anything else you can conjure up. The colors and styles are endless, and only your creativity and the artist will limit you.
